1. Confidential or Closed Adoption
If for personal reasons the birth parents wish to maintain complete confidentiality, a closed adoption plan is available. In this type of adoption, there is no contact
between the birth parents and adoptive parents. A closed adoption plan establishes that no ongoing communication or information is shared after the adoption is
finalized.
2. Semi-Open Adoption
In a semi-open adoption plan, the birth mother or birth parents choose the adoptive parents they feel would be the best for their child. This may be done by choosing among
portfolios provided by Catholic Charities. Only non-identifying information about the family is provided, such as first names. Birth parents may meet the adoptive parents
prior to finalization, but any ongoing information exchange after the adoption is provided through the agency.
3. Open Adoption
In an open adoption plan, the adoptive parents are chosen by the birth mother/birth father. (This generally happens before the birth of the baby.)
The birth family and adoptive parents disclose identifying information. Open adoption establishes an agreement for ongoing contact after the adoptive placement, either
through telephone, e-mail, letters, or face-to-face meetings at pre-arranged times.
