What is the cost of an adoption?
There is no cost to birth parents. Adoptive parents pay a fee to the agency to cover our expenses to support and promote the program. Catholic Charities is a non-profit organization.

Do you have to be Catholic to utilize Catholic Charities’ adoption services?
No. Catholic Charities works with birth parents of any religion, race, or national origin.

Can I choose the adoptive family for my child?
Yes. Catholic Charities has portfolios of families who have already been screened and approved. You may select the family you feel would be the best for your child.

How will I know if my child is with a good family?
The best assurance is to get to know the family you select. If you desire, Catholic Charities will arrange meetings, prior to the birth, for you and the adoptive family to discuss issues that may concern you.

As a private agency, Catholic Charities carefully screens all applicants wanting to adopt through our agency and reserves the right to disqualify applicants. Our adoptive families are thoroughly screened for marital, emotional and financial stability.

Will my baby go to a foster home until the legal process is complete?
Catholic Charities is generally able to place infants directly into the adoptive home you choose for your child. We believe that it is in the best interest of a child to begin the attatchment process as soon as possible and to avoid being moved from one place to another.

How much contact can I have with my child after the adoption?
If you desire, your adoption worker will assist you in developing an agreement for future contact with the adoptive family. This agreement would outline the type of communication (telephone, letter, e-mail, or face-to-face), and also the general frequency of contact.

It is important to understand that adoption agreements regarding future contacts are not legally binding in Kentucky. Mutual respect and understanding between the birth parents and the adoptive family is the foundation on which an ongoing relationship must be built. All the legal steps of the adoption process remain the same as with a traditional adoption.

What rights does the father of the baby have?
The law protects the father’s rights. Working with an attorney, Catholic Charities follows all the procedures and laws necessary to ensure the adoption is binding.

Your adoption worker will assist you in talking with the birth father if he is unaware of the pregnancy or against an adoption plan. Under some circumstances, the rights of a birth father can be terminated involuntarily.

Some birth fathers become actively involved in the adoption process. Catholic Charities welcomes birth fathers who want to help plan for their child’s future.
